DAVIS-KERRY
(Toronto) - This afternoon a most singular occurrence took place. A couple were
married in the Police Court. It seems about a year ago, a good-looking young
man named David Davis and a girl named Annie Florence Kerry emigrated from
Ireland, and on board ship, struck acquaintance which ripened, the couple
finally becoming engaged. David took advantage of the fair Annie's confiding
nature and she became enceinte.
Discovering
this, he grew tired of the girl, neglected her, and at last tried to throw her
off altogether, but she would not be disposed of so easily, and on Tuesday, she
went to Rider's livery stable where her fickle lover is employed as a hostler,
and upbraided him for his conduct. He got mad. After some pretty rough signage
on both sides, he seized the poor girl by the throat and threatened to kill
her. She immediately swore out a warrant against her cruel deceiver and he was
arrested, charged with maliciously and feloniously choking the complainant with
intent to do bodily harm.
The
girl informed the detective who had the case that she did not wish to prosecute
the defendant but to compel him to marry her. This having been communicated to
the prisoner and the enormity of his crime being pointed out, and being told
that he might be imprisoned for life, he finally consented to yield to the
wishes of the girl and be married then and there. The licence was procured and
the intimidated bridegroom and the trembling bride were conducted to the Chief
Constable's office where, in the presence of a couple of detectives,
representatives of the press, the Chief Constable, and some Court officials,
the twain were made one.
After
the ceremony, the bride reluctantly left the building, and the bridegroom was
about to do the same, but the law had not been satisfied, and he was conducted
back to his cell. Mrs. Davis, weeping, then sought the Magistrate, and
succeeded in getting her husband released on bail,
preliminary
to having the charge formally withdrawn to-morrow. Mr. Davis says that,
although an unwilling party to the marriage, he will do his best to make the
lady happy.

marriages that have taken place from it. During the past ten years, several
young girls have been married there, securing good husbands and a happy future.
The last addition to the list was made last night when Merrick W. Marshall, a
young and accomplished commercial traveller, married Mary L. Sturgeon, a young
girl employed in the house. The courtship had lasted only ten days, young
Marshall putting up at the house a week ago. He was ingenious, manly, and
handsome; she was pretty and had winning, lovable ways, and the consequence was
that the pair fell in love with each other.
Yesterday
afternoon the interesting young couple were married by the Rev. Mr. Williamson.
